Improving Your Credit Score

A comment on my post called A Different Approach to the Emergency Fund linked to a blog that stated that I was named the “the most influential, informative, or entertaining” blog from the state of Indiana. This was the Credit Card Blog on Your Credit Network. The post previous to this one was about How to Improve Your Credit Score. This was a very good post. Here are some highlights:

  • First of all, there is no quick way to improve your credit score. It is a long process, but the rewards at the end are worth it. Rewards like lower interest rates and better credit cards.
  • Make payments on time. This is the most sensitive area, and probably the easiest one to control. Missed or frequently late payments will greatly affect your score. If you have missed payments, get them current. Having them current for a long time will help reverse your score, and start it back on it’s way up.
  • Collections or overdue debt will stay on your credit history for 7 years. Some companies will help you remove these from your history for a small fee.
  • Keep your balances low. If you have debt, do not move it around. Although this is a good way to pay off your debt, it hurts your credit score more than just paying it off. Closing accounts after you have paid them off will hurt your credit score too. Part of your score is how much credit you have that you aren’t using.
  • Do not open too many accounts is a short period of time. Also, do not look for credit too often in a short period of time. I.E. Do not get a mortgage and a new car loan in a relatively short period of time because the constant credit pulls will hurt your score. Open some new accounts to rebuild your history, but do it in a manner that is easy for you to repay.

The only problem I have with this list is that I do not like to leave accounts open that I am not using. I don’t like the idea of an account open that I am not tracking. It just seems to be left open for someone to abuse. I know it may hurt my credit score to close these accounts, but it gives me piece of mind to close them.

When Your Car Lease Is Up

I just got my first issue of Bottom Line Magazine, and it had an article about not getting overcharged when your car lease is up. I just got done with a car lease of my own, and I used a few of these tips. I also wanted to pass along my experience as it may help some of you out there.

  • Try not to lease from Chrysler
I have leased from GM and Chrysler, and Chrysler charges you $300 if you do not lease another Chrysler car when you are done with your lease. My uncle got out of this $300 charge by calling and stating he was a Chrysler employee for 30 years and a Chrysler retiree. GM does not have a charge like, and I do not think any other car company does. Chrysler does not tell you about this charge up front either. I had to find out about it through my uncle, and he found out about it from the bill.

A Different Approach to the Emergency Fund

There are a lot of things you should already know about an Emergency Fund:

  1. YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE!
  2. It should contain about 3 to 6 months of your salary
  3. It should be in a different account than your month-to-month spending. Put it in a High Interest Savings Account.

Saving Energy (Saving Money)

I recently have been making many modifications to the house in order to reduce our heating bill. Our house gets unusually cold throughout the day, and I know that outside air in coming in somehow. Since the weather in Indiana is getting colder and colder (it is supposed to be 10 degrees tonight), I figure now is as good as time as ever to get my house more energy efficient. Below is a list of things I either have done or will do:

Update to Personal Finance Blog Madness

On Friday, after the 64 blogs have been finalized, I will rank them from 1 - 64 based on Alexa (easiest way for me to do it). I will then take every 4 and randomly put them into a region of the bracket.

I wanted to decide what would be a good prize for the winner, and the best that I could come up with is a link or banner on my site. A gift card or money would be nice, but I am cheap. I could give away books, but I am sure all the books I have everyone has already read. The winner will be allowed to design (or I can design) a banner that will be placed on top of my center widget. I will keep it up there for 1 or more months, depending on how popular this is.

Here are the rules:

  1. Each blog will submit their best post from the last year. If no post is submitted, then I will go and choose one from the last couple of weeks.
  2. Twice a week, One blog will go against another blog, and the winner will advance.
  3. Each match will be it’s own blog post, and readers can leave a comment on the post for the PF Blog they want to win. Readers will be voting on both the post and the blog itself.
  4. The PF Blog with the most votes will advance to the next round. Some interaction will be made by myself, but it will be limited. I will only allow one vote per match per IP Address. Sorry if you and your buddies at work all want to vote, but I have to stop abuse somehow.
  5. This Friday - 3/2/2007 - The 64 PF Blogs will be finalized. Matches will start the next Thursday - 3/8/2007. The 64 PF Blogs will need to send me their submitted post by Thursday morning.
  6. Matches will run Monday Morning to Wednesday Night at 9PM and Thursday morning to Sunday Night at 9PM. I will try to get matches posted Monday and Wednesday Morning by 9AM at the latest.
  7. Winner will receive a banner link on the top of my center widget on my site.

These are the rules, but they are subject to change before Thursday March 8. The rules will not change once the Tournament is started. Good Luck everyone.

Buy TV Now or After Super Bowl

I have wanted a new LCD TV for a long time now, and I am in a big debate with myself and my wife about whether to buy one now or after the Super Bowl. I was always told (and remember from last year) that after the Super Bowl, the prices on TVs went back up. I was also told that going to places after the Super Bowl, you can find open box TVs where people return them after using them for the Super Bowl. They may be cheaper, but I would much rather have a brand new one all to myself.

I told myself I would buy a 32 inch for under $500 or a 37 inch for around $700. I have only found one 37 inch under $700, but it was without a Tuner. The reason I want a Tuner is in case we drop our cable, I could still use the TV.

I am looking at two 37 inch TVs this week. One from Target Hannibal Rising hd , and one from CompUSA total recall dvdrip download

Collateral Damage ipod

. I like the one from CompUSA because my brother has the same brand, and he loves it. I love this TV too, and I told myself I would like to get an Olevia TV. I just got a new Discover card, so if I buy the TV, I have 0% APR until October.

So should I buy now, or wait until next week?

Make Money - PayPerPost Icon On Bottom of Posts

You will notice the PayPerPost icon on the bottom of all my posts today. It is a nice opportunity for people new to PayPerPost to make some money. If you click on the link, sign up, and write a review of any of my posts on your blog, you can make some easy money. Also, I will give you a linkback - I will do a review of your blog here.

So you get money, I get money, and we both get links to our sites - A Win-Win Situation. I think you get around $7.50 for the review, plus there are countless other opportunities on the site to make more money. I don’t know how well this will do, and I really don’t like the icons all over, so they may come down soon.

Any questions, leave a comment or shoot me an email.

Update: I am taking the PayPerPost link off of all the posts on the Main Page. I will leave it on this post, and on the post page. It just looked tacky under every post.

John Chow - Review Me Whore

I used to frequent JohnChow.com

Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling movie

once a day, sometimes more. He had some very good information on his site about the internet, websites, and making money. His site was very informative for someone like me, a newbie to the blog/website world. He gave me a chance to use Kontera on this site to make more money. But his content has since been going downhill, FAST!

Every time I head over there now, he is doing a Review Me review for something nobody really cares about. That is all he does, besides the articles with the pictures he takes. It’s Review Me this, Review Me that. No one cares about content people pay you to review! He had such a good site, but now it is crap. I received so much information from his site, but now all I am getting is other websites I should go see because they paid him money. Talk about the rich getting richer.

I am sure if I had so many Review Me offers, I would do them (because I like money), but he has a ton of money. His blog makes more money in a month than most of the other blogs will make in a couple of years, probably ever. But he just keeps doing the Review Me reviews to no end. I know it is a good opportunity for someone to get their name out there because John’s site receives so many visitors, but does John have to do some many reviews.

To use John’s terms, he is becoming a Review Me Whore. He has done 61 Review Me reviews, 20 in the last month. I doubt he is struggling for content, so what is it? John, I think your readers would like to know.
