I am thinking about upgrading my computer / operating system to replace my current desktop. I currently have a HP Presario that I got for around $170. It served well as a home PC, but I think I will be looking for a Server this time. The reason behind this is that I use my desktop as a server anyway. My wife and I both have laptops, and our office is off the garage, meaning I have to go into the garage to get into the office. I use my PC for file storage and to host a website.
Before I buy the Server, I would like to buy the operating system for the server. I want to start hosting my own websites (the plural being the key). I have a few ideas in the works for some money-making sites. Hosting my blog would be nice too, since I have had all that trouble with my hosting company. I have been shopping for a Microsoft product, but those prices are way too high. Windows Server 2003 costs around $700, and even Small Business Server is over $300. I wanted Windows Server because I have taken classes on it and know how to use it. I also have Exchange 2003 so I can set up my own email address for my domains.
I have since turned my search over to Vista. Apparently IIS 7.0 (Vista and Longhorn’s version) has fixed all the problems with IIS 5.1, XP’s version. IIS 5.1 will not let you host more than one website. It will, but you have to have a work around. It also will not allow more than 10 connections at a time. With some tweaking, you can get up to 39 connections at a time, but that is still the max.

For my money-making websites, I would like over 1,000 visitors a day, and that 39 connections at a time might not work. I would like to not use the workaround for hosting more than 1 domain at a time.
Vista Business was only about $155, and Vista Ultimate was only $200. If anyone has any comments or experience with Vista, let me know. I have found it had to do research on it as it is scattered across the net.
