I wrote to GoDaddy.com to ask why they had the domain registered, and the support representative gave me a very information reply:
- 0 to 42 days later the Registrar releases the domain to the Registry
- The domain is held for 30 days by the Registry (Redemption Period)
- The domain takes 5 days to be released
- The domain is available for new registration
A domain is not immediately available after the expiration date. It will take at least 35 to 85 days after the expiration date before Domain Alert Pro will be able to attempt to register the domain on your behalf. Until that time, the domain is not available as a new registration.
I thought this was some very good info to pass along, as I knew absolutely none of this before I emailed GoDaddy. They also said that because GoDaddy is not the only company that backorders domain, I am not guaranteed the domain. There are three possibilites:
- I successfully backorder the domain, and it is mine.
- I do not get the domain because someone with a different backorder company registered it first.
- Since there is more than one backorder, the domain will go up for auction
If Number 3 happens, I am screwed as I am cheap and do not want to pay a ton of money. My only chance is Number 1. Wish me luck.
Hey, I’m Lacey. I was wondering if you might want to do a link trade with my Wedding Finance blog? My fiance and I are documenting our attempt at fundraising all of our wedding money.
Email me at lacey@savingforawedding.com and we can set up links. Thanks!

Thanks for the information. A very close friend of mine is hosting sites on godaddy. I’ll pass this information on to him.
Another option if the domain is worth a lot to you is to offer the owner of the domain 50 or 100 bucks. I don’t know if that counts as “a lot” but depending on what your intentions and the potential of the domain, you may earn your ROI in no time.
I’ve had a few backorders from godaddy for expired domains that i was not able to get.
I was going to offer him up to $50 for it, but he said they usually run from 5K-10K, and that is way out of my price range. I have ordered the .info of the domain, so I will see where that takes me.
